Summary
- International vessels are adopting their own non-lethal defense systems to guard against attacks by armed pirates. Major domestic shipyards are also implementing various systems to counter hijacking from the ship design stage. Among these, the most representative defensive tool is the LRAD™ system, which fires high-powered, special sonic waves to defend against attacks.
- Ships exposed to high-powered sound waves become unable to communicate, and exposed targets who do not protect their ears will experience nausea and dizziness, rendering them incapable of attack. This is the best tool for defending against armed attacks while unarmed.
- The Republic of Korea Navy's Cheonghae Unit also successfully implemented the LRAD™ system in 2009 to combat Somali pirates and provide maritime warning broadcasts during Operation Dawn in the Gulf of Aden in 2011.
